In Zaandam South there is an unusual flat called Spaghetti Flat. But where does that name come from and who lives there? In a playful family exhibition at the Zaans Museum, visitors discover that people have been coming to the Zaan region for work for centuries. They brought belongings, customs and traditions that shaped the region.

The Zaans Museum proudly welcomes the traveling exhibition Ode to the Netherlands by Jimmy Nelson. The photographer, known for his impressive depictions of cultural traditions worldwide, has now focused his lens on the Netherlands. Ode aan Nederland takes visitors along twenty Dutch communities that cherish their regional and traditional costumes.

Claude Monet visited Zaandam in 1871. The famous French painter was so impressed by the Zaan landscape, the windmills, the wooden houses, and the Zaan river that he created an astounding 25 paintings and 9 sketches of the landscape.

Discover everything there is to know about the traditional Dutch craft of sailcloth and windmill cloth weaving at the Weaver’s House on the Zaanse Schans. In the eighteenth century, two families lived in the Weaver’s House, right in-between the five looms.
